So the Commerce Comet was flying high when this important slab of cardboard was hatched from its wax, engaged in a season that would once again find him front and center in both the Midsummer and Fall Classics. While Mantle earned membership in the first series of the 1953 Topps set, his population here is not as far removed from that of the previous year's troubled final series as one might expect. Only twelve examples of this 1953 card have achieved a higher ranking than this one from the experts at PSA, compared to nine examples of the 1952 rookie that have scored Mint 9 or better.
The full bleed color block at lower corner of the 1953 Topps issue has proven to be its Achilles' heel for collectors angling for elite grades, but this one has beaten the odds, providing a rare and exciting opportunity for the most discerning of cardboard enthusiasts.
